Writer/Poet: KAREN BIGELOW
Karen’s transparent acrylic and watercolours are a celebration of life. Her silverpoint is a celebration of freedom and intrigue. She strives to capture the essence of the land, its beauty, grace and power. From wilderness to rural landscapes, wildflowers to garden splendour, architecture to still-life, people in motion to portraits, a sense of harmony and balance is transformed into wonder.
Born in rural Ontario, Karen enjoyed a career as a Health Information Professional. Her career took a detour and she plunged into the introduction, development, and implementation of computer systems in HealthCare in North America. She is a Practitioner in CranioSacral Therapy, Therapeutic Touch and Meditation practice. Her passion for life, exploration and discovery has returned her to creating art, never abandoned but often on the backburner during her career. To refuel her body, mind and spirit, Karen has always escaped, with or without a canoe, into her much-loved Canadian wilderness. When not in the outdoors, or spending February in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, she is in her studio creating.
Karen has been involved in arts all her life. As one of the founding members of The Writers’ Circle of Durham Region (WCDR), she was the facilitator for creating this non-profit corporation. She insisted and directed the writing of the articles of incorporation, mission statement, and the constitutional by-laws. WCDR was born March, 1995. She held the office of Secretary/Treasure and attended every event and workshop. She was Managing Editor of the grass-roots and successful “Word Weaver” newsletter. Two months after incorporation, Karen co-chaired the Festival Committee. With enthusiasm and maximum participation the first Durham Region Writers’ Festival “The Word is Out ’95” was launched. Karen co-facilitated with Dick Ferrier a satellite writers group. She was granted honourary membership to the group renamed the Richard Ferrier Writers’Circle as a dedication to him.
Karen has written technical and training manuals, corporate writing and policies for the Canadian Government and articles for corporate and non-profit newsletters. Her poetry and prose have has been shared with many.
She currently writes a column Musings of an Artist for PRAC's (PineRidge Arts Council) newspaper, "ArtScene." She is a member of The PineRidge Arts Council, "a volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the quality of life within the community by developing widespread appreciation, support and involvement in the arts."
